About Southwest Children's Academy

Academic Preschool with School Transportation

Southwest Children’s Academy is a long-standing San Angelo facility that focuses on school readiness through structured pedagogy. Since 1992, the center has served the community by utilizing the Frog Street and Circle curriculums to develop reading, math, and motor skills across all age groups. As a participant in the Texas School Ready and Texas Rising Star programs, the academy emphasizes a hybrid learning environment that prepares children for the transition to kindergarten. The facility is equipped to handle the logistical needs of busy families, providing daily meals through the National Food Program and transportation to and from Bonham, Bowie, and Lamar Elementary schools. Beyond the classroom, the center offers after-school care and full-day programs during school holidays. The environment includes dedicated spaces for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, ensuring age-appropriate engagement and development for every child in their care.

I’m extremely disappointed with the leadership at SW Children’s Center, particularly with Brooke, the director. I understand that working with children is demanding and requires a special kind of person, but professionalism and basic care should never be compromised. There has been an ongoing issue I’ve raised multiple times over the past few weeks. Each time, my concerns were brushed off or dismissed. When I directly asked Brooke if she was even curious to understand why I was upset, her response was, “No, not really.” That level of disregard for a parent’s concern is deeply troubling. Most importantly, my child’s basic needs are not being consistently met. On more than one occasion, I’ve picked up my daughter only to find she had a soiled diaper that had clearly not been changed for some time. This is not a minor oversight—it is unacceptable and borders on neglect. I also understand there have been staffing and retention challenges, but that cannot and should not excuse failing to meet the most fundamental aspects of childcare. At this point, I cannot recommend SW Children’s Center to other families

Quality of care has greatly decreased and will no longer be using this facility. Staffing is inadequate as evidenced by children being left in pullups with dried feces in it and the "teachers" clearly overwhelmed and the kids are out of control. Staff is chatting instead of actually watching the kids in the play area. The "teachers" are glorified babysitters and the meals are nutritionally deficient for growing children. They have recurrent Hand, Foot, and Mouth breakouts and the manager, Brooke, will not listen to parents concerns, is dismissive, and refuses to acknowledge literal health & safety concerns. The 2 older ladies that give the kids breakfast minimally interact with the kids, do not comfort them, and seem to not want to be there. I understand there is a shortage of childcare in this area but unless this agency makes some major changes, I would not recommend trusting them with your child.

Can't recommend this place enough. The staff was always professional, courteous, and kind. Our son loved his teachers, especially Pam, Carly, Aulani, and Vicky. The director, Jill, was always great at communicating and very professional. The facility is clean and well maintained.

We highly recommend Southwest Children's Academy for their outstanding care and educational services! Our son started at 2 months old and has had exceptional care, especially from Pam and Carly in the infant room and Aulani as he got older. The people who work here truly LOVE your kiddo, want them to grow, learn and thrive, and take time to get to know your child's needs. My son loves walking in their doors each day to see his friends and teachers. The teachers are always helpful, supportive, and knowledgeable. The Director Jill is exceptional, communicates well, and creates a strong partnership between home and school. Jill is quick to call if they need to inform you about anything regarding your child. The location is clean, organized, and fun for the kids. I can confidently attest to the outstanding quality and dedication that Southwest Children's Academy brings to the table.

Short review: Do Not Recommend. Long Review: My son was 4 months when we took him here. After a few weeks, the director Jill, pulled me to the office and told me she hears him crying all day from her office and recommends we get in home child care. Don't you think I would prefer that, too, if I could afford it? Duh. I was genuinely taken aback and confused. Every morning and afternoon I would ask the teachers how he did and they always said he was fine. Plus the daily paper reports I got from them never mentioned anything or they weren't filled out at all. And when I brought that up to the director, her response was, "that's not their job." Uhm, excuse me? And when I brought it up to the teachers, they explained they are trained not to fill out negative things and to keep it positive. I asked them to please keep it honest regardless of how he was - because I want to know how his day REALLY went. After this I popped in a few times without notice and watched him on the cameras with the director. Each time my son was fine and not crying. Maybe I just caught him at a good time each time? Who knows. I will say, there was a difference between the morning and afternoon teachers. It was obvious the morning teachers did not like him and wanted him gone. While the afternoon teachers enjoyed having him and playing with him. My son may not have been the easiest. But having your teachers not be truthful on the daily reports and then telling the parents their child cries all day and recommending to keep them home is not ok. Maybe try working together as a team to make it easier on all parties. We took my son to another place and he loved it and would be so excited to see his teachers. Not only that, when we moved out of the state, the teachers cried and expressed nothing but love for him.

Aggregated insights from public records & parent discussions

Safety Record

As of early 2024, the facility maintained a high food safety score of 97/100 from the City of San Angelo. Historically, the center was recognized in 2015 news reports for having little to zero deficiencies during state inspections. No major news incidents, recent state enforcement actions, or significant legal issues were found in public records.

Parent Reputation

The academy has a generally positive reputation among parents, who frequently praise the academic curriculum and the helpfulness of the office staff. However, one parent reported dissatisfaction regarding behavioral management policies and toddler suspensions.

Staff Insights

Employee reviews on Indeed reflect a mixed work environment with an overall rating of 2.9 out of 5 stars. While some staff describe the work as rewarding and fun, others have cited concerns regarding low pay, high stress, and a cliquish workplace culture. Some former employees alleged that management focuses strictly on minimum staffing ratios, which can lead to high workloads for teachers.
