About Avalon Academy

Avalon Academy in Houston's Montrose

Established in 1987, Avalon Academy is a non-profit center in the heart of Montrose serving children from six weeks to five years of age. The program utilizes a multiple intelligences approach and a bilingual curriculum to foster academic and emotional development, specifically preparing students for entry into Houston’s competitive kindergarten programs. The school is governed by a board of directors, which includes current parents, ensuring a community-centered environment. With an average staff tenure of twelve years, the academy offers remarkable consistency for children. Beyond the core curriculum, students participate in various enrichment activities such as Spanish, art with long-time specialists, dance, and gross motor development on the Jolly Trolley. The facility features age-appropriate outdoor play spaces and classrooms dedicated to specific developmental stages, providing a nurturing home-away-from-home that has served Houston families for over three decades.

We brought our son here when he was just 5 months old and it was the best decision we’ve made in regard to his development. Quality care and peace of mind are stellar. Highly recommend if you are considering even before 5 months.

My son began attending this daycare at just 5 months old and continued until he turned 3. Throughout those years, I was consistently impressed with the nurturing environment, and more importantly, he was genuinely happy there. Yesterday, now at 17 years old, we found ourselves back in town and decided to visit. As we looked through the gate, a familiar face appeared—one of his former caregivers, surrounded by children, called out, "G--, is that you?" She recognized him instantly, seeing the little boy he once was. This unexpected reunion led us to reconnect with several of his past caregivers. Each one was as kind and dedicated as I remembered, and it resurfaced warm feelings in my son as he reconnected to the place. We were both so touched by the memories and warmth of the staff. The fact that these wonderful staff members are still part of the daycare speaks volumes about the leadership and the loving, consistent environment they've maintained over the years. It's truly remarkable.

We've had such a good experience at Avalon Academy! I like that it's a smaller group of kids (about 100), and all of the teachers know and greet all of the kiddos. Many of the teachers have a long tenure at the school and are so sweet with the children! This daycare was competitively priced versus other places we looked at, and they also had fewer holidays where the daycare was closed, which was a big benefit for us, since we both work. We've seen our daughter learn and grow so much since joining Avalon, and she seems to really enjoy it!

Avalon Academy exceeded all of my expectations when it comes to childcare. My daughter started attending here as an infant, and I can remember how nerve-racking it was looking for a place that she would be loved, cared for, and thrive in. She continued attending Avalon until she was four, and my son attended here as a baby as well. Quite literally every teacher, administrator, etc., at Avalon showed my family love and care, and we had a positive experience with every classroom my children attended. Not only do they treat the children with so much love but also one another. Positivity radiates throughout Avalon because kindness is consistently modeled for the children, and it shows! I am forever grateful for Avalon Academy and the foundation they laid for my children that will last them a lifetime! We will remember all of these women and this school fondly forever! I HIGHLY recommend enrolling your child at Avalon.

Avalon has been a great blessing! I absolutely love the entire staff they are all so loving & caring. I know my child is in great hands. The only reason we are leaving is due to us moving out of the state but it makes me extremely sad taking my daughter out of Avalon Academy. I highly recommend this school to any parents wanting to make sure their kids are in environment where they will grow and thrive. I've seen tremendous progress in her education and she's always excited to share all the things shes learned!

Web Report

Aggregated insights from public records & parent discussions

Safety Record

Avalon Academy is a licensed child care center (Permit #233062) with a capacity for 147 children and no recorded history of major news-reported safety incidents or closures. State records indicate the facility has maintained its license since 1987, and while parent discussions mention minor historical reports, such as a staff member being cited for a non-abusive protocol violation (kissing a child on the forehead), no high-risk safety concerns were identified in recent public records. The school operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit overseen by a board of directors.

Parent Reputation

The academy maintains a strong reputation among parents on Reddit and local forums, where it is frequently praised for its 'family-centered' atmosphere and highly tenured staff. Common themes in reviews include high levels of trust, with many families keeping children enrolled from infancy through kindergarten readiness. While online ratings are limited, anecdotal evidence from long-term residents consistently describes the school as a reliable 'hidden gem' in the Montrose area.

Staff Insights

Staff reviews are mixed; some employees on Indeed have described the environment as 'unstable' with management concerns as recently as 2019, while others highlight a 'family-like' work culture and supportive leadership. Notably, state-affiliated child care resource data identifies the facility as having 'Excellent' teacher tenure and education levels. The school's non-profit structure includes an elected board of current parents and school supporters.
