What Parents Say
5 reviews from parents
updated review: After sending both of our daughters to Mustard Seed Academy from 2019–2024, we made the difficult decision to leave. We have many wonderful memories there, and as I mentioned in my prior review, the teachers were absolutely amazing. I never had any concern about their love and care for our girls, and they truly made a lasting impact. However, as a working mom, the constant changes became difficult to manage. For example, during Thanksgiving break we were informed without warning that the hours would change to 9–4. After major pushback from parents scrambling to adjust, the school revised the schedule—but still closed 30 minutes earlier than before. While that was more manageable, the lack of planning and communication was frustrating. Over time, these changes often felt reactive and not well thought out. We ultimately moved our daughter to a different preschool where communication and leadership are much more consistent. At her current campus, the administration is visible every day—greeting parents, holding meetings to keep families informed, and being actively present for the children. By comparison, during our years at Mustard Seed, I had very little interaction with the administration, and I’m not sure my daughters even knew who they were. That said, we truly miss the teachers, who were wonderful with our daughters every single day. Mustard Seed has many positives, and we are grateful for the foundation it gave our girls. I would simply caution parents to be mindful of how administrative decisions and communication might impact your child’s day-to-day care. A business has the right to make adjustments, but clear communication is key.
Updated review: It’s important to note that this review is in no way a reflection of the teachers at MSA—they are truly exceptional. Every single one of them has loved and cared for all of my children with genuine warmth and dedication. If this review were based solely on their efforts, it would be five stars without hesitation. However, after six years and sending all of my children through MSA, we made the difficult decision to leave unexpectedly due to ongoing issues with the owners of the establishment. The core problem lies in a consistent lack of transparency and an unwillingness to communicate effectively or collaborate with parents. Changes to hours, fees, and other important matters were often made without proper notice or explanation, leaving families in the dark. One particularly concerning incident involved the discovery of lead at the school in February 2025. The way this was handled—without immediate and clear communication or transparency—was deeply disappointing and eroded our trust. The MSA owners are very difficult to form relationships with, which makes it even harder to feel heard or supported when concerns arise. As a parent, open and honest communication is essential and non-negotiable, especially when it comes to my children’s wellbeing. I sincerely hope the owners begin to take feedback seriously and work toward creating a more transparent, communicative, and approachable environment for all families.
My child attended part time, in the prek 5 room. Ms. B is a wonderful teacher, she was super kind to the students and they learned a lot. The rest of teachers/staff were always kind and helpful. They had programs where the students presented either dancing or singing, it was great practice for public speaking. Parents/family were able to attend these, and it was so neat to experience. For the most part, the school is amazing and would highly recommend. In a time where Spanish is still being put down, I love that my child could a attend a school in one of his home languages and not feel othered. My only two issues were the following: - We had a bullying issue with other students, and I say bullying because it was consistent and repeated the whole school year. Nothing was really done about it. I tried to get my child not be around these other children, but he’s 5 and really wanted to be friends with them. He was verbally and physically hurt. It really is up to teachers and staff to keep the children safe and provide boundaries to be held. I never really understood why the students that did that didn’t receive any consequences, there should be zero tolerance for physically hurting another child(literally punched on the stomach). The punching occurred toward the end of the school year, but that doesn’t negate the need for a resolution. - The black mulch at the playground. It’s really the worst, it ruined shoes and my kiddo came home with stained skin and clothing. I’m not opposed to him being dirty with dirt, paint, etc., but the black from the mulch was another story.
Mustard Seed is a wonderful bilingual preschool that I highly recommend for young children. When I was searching for a daycare for my first son, I toured several facilities—but none compared to Mustard Seed. From the moment you walk in, you feel a sense of ease. They offer a strong curriculum, and it’s incredible to see how much the students can achieve at such a young age. Five years later, my second son also attended Mustard Seed—and he was even taught by some of the same amazing teachers my first son had. That kind of consistency speaks volumes about how much the staff love being there. If you’re looking for a preschool that will truly educate and care for your child, Mustard Seed is the place. Becoming part of the MSA family has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for my children
MSA is great for the Spanish Immersion, community of parents, and nurturing teachers. This review is not meant to be punitive but perhaps to serve as feedback for improvement. We have been gone for about 6 months now after being with them for three years. It was evident when we left, but even more now after our new experience with our new preschool, that the front staff and some teachers have poor early childhood development education. If fact, there was never any transparency on qualifications. This is so important if you are taking care of toddlers. Not only for the well being of the children but for partnership with us parents as our babies grow and develop. It takes a village! I am happy to hear that now there are new efforts to improve communication problems between the daycare and parents. I do hope that education on early childhood development is improved as well.
Web Report
Aggregated insights from public records & parent discussions
Safety Record
In March 2025, the facility was found to have lead-based paint and lead dust contamination throughout the building after an enrolled child tested positive for elevated blood lead levels. The academy faced significant scrutiny and parent backlash for waiting three weeks to notify families after receiving initial positive test results. Additionally, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has previously flagged this location (License #1523063) on a 'Centers Needing Improvement' list based on official inspection violations.
Parent Reputation
The academy's reputation is currently polarized; while historical reviews praised its boutique Spanish immersion program and nurturing environment, recent parent sentiment is heavily critical due to the 2025 lead safety incident and the management's perceived lack of transparency. Some parents reported that their childcare contracts were terminated by the school after they expressed concerns regarding the lead exposure. Overall, recent feedback highlights a significant breach of trust between the administration and many families.
Staff Insights
Specific employee reviews for the San Antonio location are limited, though Indeed data estimates the average hourly pay for a Teaching Assistant at the facility to be approximately $14.71. Available listings indicate the center is women-owned and small-scale, with a focus on low student-teacher ratios. No qualitative feedback from current San Antonio staff was found to verify turnover or specific management culture.
