About Childrens Discovery Center

Children's Discovery Center South Austin

Children's Discovery Center South offers a unique 'nature school' experience where mud adventures and outdoor exploration are the core of the daily routine. Under the leadership of director Jaya Harper, the program emphasizes free play and creativity, utilizing its enviable location adjacent to greenbelt trails. The facility is designed to foster wonder, with naturally lit indoor classrooms that flow into dedicated, shaded outdoor play spaces for every age group. The curriculum is Reggio-influenced, encouraging children to lead their own discovery through art, hiking, and seasonal water play in the on-site swimming pool. While the atmosphere is intentionally 'un-fancy' and lived-in, it provides a nurturing, family-like environment where children are encouraged to get messy while developing social and emotional confidence. This is a place where childhood is celebrated through dirt, water, and genuine community connection among families and long-tenured staff members.

A truly wonderful place for our 2 kiddos! The staff is caring and trustworthy and we've been with them for years. Each classroom has its own shaded outdoor play area, which is so rare. Our kids enjoy coming to school, are happy, and well cared for every day. Highly recommend!

We are born and raised Austinites who are now raising our first little one in South Austin. After reaping the benefit of familial care for the first year of their life, it was time to find a new routine with more social interaction. We toured many different daycares and felt a consistent struggle to "choose" some kind of pathway - e.g. getting Spanish immersion but having no real outdoor space, or the like. In the end, we followed a word of mouth recco to CDC South and are so glad we did. It was the only place we toured where we felt fully safe and at ease, as if it were family, and represented the kind of childhood we ourselves had. Plus, as they get older, they'll have the benefit of the greenbelt trails just behind the school and the enclosed pool for water comfort and swim safety. While our specific class is experiencing a change of hands with teachers lately, we've found the communication very proactive. And are finding a growing sense of community in the families that attend alongside.

We changed day cares to find a place where our son could be outside in nature more and we couldn't be happier. This is not a fancy place but it is just right for us. Our son is happy to go to "nature school" every day and comes home looking like he went on sand and mud adventures. We are very happy we made the switch as it is what our son needs.

My kids had too short of a time with the special community that is CDC South. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed warmly by each and every staff member. My children (aged 5, and 22 months) adjusted seamlessly and made sweet friends immediately. The teachers and the environment encourage the children to seek excitement and joy through creativity and wonder. During the summer, the older kids enjoyed swimming, hiking and yoga, while the littles also got the change to splash and enjoy water play. All in all- CDC South is a place were kids will be happy and safe, will be accepted for who they are, and motivated to be part of a loving family.

My 2 year old son goes to CDC, been going there since he was an infant and we absolutely love it! Jaya and all of the teachers are very kind, caring and have always done their best to make my child feel at home and honestly, this makes me very very happy as a mother. The concept of the school- free play- is something I love. Every classroom has its own outdoor playground- my son comes back covered in colors, mud, water- he always has an interesting day. All in all, I highly recommend CDC!
