About El Buen Pastor Early Childhood Development Center

Non-Profit Early Learning in East Austin

El Buen Pastor ECDC is a pillar of the East Austin community, serving families since 1976. Led by Executive Director Alma Lyra, who has been with the program since 1983, the center provides a multicultural and bilingual environment where children learn in both English and Spanish. The facility, updated in 2001, features spacious classrooms and a unique outdoor play area shaded by a large pecan tree. As a non-profit, the center is dedicated to accessibility, offering sliding-scale tuition and flexible drop-in options for children ages 14 months to 4 years. Their curriculum is play-based and creative, focusing on social skills and emotional regulation. With long-standing NAEYC accreditation and a 4-Star Texas Rising Star rating, this program combines decades of community experience with high national standards for early childhood development.

Finding affordable daycare and trustworthy daycare can be challenging, but El Buen has been a great experience for us. I have a 3-year old and 1-year old there right now. The building is centered around a courtyard play area with a beautiful pecan tree. Their staff is very friendly and most are bilingual. So my 3-year old has learned a lot of Spanish as well!

No safety concerns or major violations were found in public news records or accessible licensing snippets. The center maintains a valid state license (#49001) issued in 1987 and received a score of 93 on a routine food establishment inspection in early 2025. It is also accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), which requires meeting high safety and health standards.

Parent Reputation

The center has a long-standing positive reputation in East Austin, having operated as a community non-profit since 1976.
